Most of us have.


The human body has an incredible ability to communicate long before disease develops. It doesn't suddenly wake up one morning with a chronic illness. More often, it sends subtle signals over months, and sometimes years, giving us opportunities to make changes before a larger health concern develops.


One of the most common threads linking many chronic health conditions is inflammation.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is your body's natural defence and repair system. When you cut your finger, catch a cold, or sprain your ankle, your immune system immediately gets to work; it increases blood flow to the affected area, sends immune cells to fight infection or repair damaged tissue, and begins the healing process.


This is known as acute inflammation, and it's both healthy and necessary. Once healing is complete, the inflammatory response settles down.


The problem begins when inflammation never fully switches off.


Known as chronic low-grade inflammation, this ongoing immune response may persist for months or even years without causing obvious symptoms. Instead of helping the body heal, it gradually begins placing stress on healthy tissues and organs.


Think of inflammation like a campfire: a small, controlled fire provides warmth and serves an important purpose. Left burning continuously, however, it eventually begins damaging everything around it. Chronic inflammation works much the same way.


Your body whispers before it shouts

One of the challenges with chronic inflammation is that its earliest symptoms often seem insignificant.


You may notice:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent headaches

  • Digestive discomfort or bloating

  • Muscle aches

  • Joint stiffness

  • Skin flare-ups

  • Poor sleep

  • Mood changes

  • Seasonal allergies becoming more severe

  • Frequent colds or infections

  • Slower recovery after exercise or illness

On their own, these symptoms may not appear concerning. Together, however, they can provide valuable clues that your body is working harder than it should.


Unfortunately, many of us dismiss these early warning signs:

"I'm just stressed."

"I'm getting older."

"I've always had a sensitive stomach."

"This is just part of life."


Sometimes those explanations are true, and sometimes they cause us to overlook an underlying imbalance that deserves attention.


Why so many symptoms are blamed on ageing

Ageing naturally brings changes to our bodies: muscle mass gradually declines, hormones change, recovery slows, and our immune system shifts over time.

However, research has shown that ageing is also associated with increasing levels of chronic inflammation, a phenomenon scientists now refer to as "inflammageing."¹


This doesn't mean every ache, wrinkle, or grey hair is caused by inflammation. It does mean that symptoms often dismissed as "just ageing" may deserve a closer look, particularly when they appear suddenly, worsen over time, or begin interfering with everyday life.

How chronic inflammation can affect your health

Scientists now recognise chronic inflammation as an important contributor to many long-term health conditions.²


These include:

  • Heart disease – Chronic inflammation can damage the lining of blood vessels, encouraging plaque formation and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • Type 2 diabetes – Persistent inflammation can interfere with insulin signalling, making it more difficult for the body to regulate blood sugar effectively.

  • Autoimmune diseases – Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease involve an immune system that mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, creating ongoing inflammation.

  • Osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis – Long-term inflammation contributes to cartilage breakdown, joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

  • Digestive disorders – Inflammation plays a significant role in conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, while also contributing to digestive symptoms in many other gastrointestinal disorders.

  • Fatty liver disease – Chronic inflammation can promote fat accumulation and scarring within the liver, affecting its ability to function efficiently.

  • Neurodegenerative diseases – Researchers continue to investigate how inflammation may contribute to conditions including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

  • Depression and anxiety – An increasing body of research suggests inflammation may influence brain chemistry and contribute to certain mood disorders in susceptible individuals.

  • Some cancers – Long-standing inflammation may create an environment that supports abnormal cell growth, although cancer development is also influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors.


While inflammation is rarely the only cause of disease, it is increasingly recognized as an important contributor that can interact with genetics, nutrition, environmental exposures, sleep, stress, and lifestyle habits over many years.


10 everyday habits that increase inflammation

Not all inflammation begins with illness or injury. Modern lifestyles often expose us to factors that encourage the immune system to remain activated.


Some of the most common include:

  1. Eating a diet high in ultra-processed foods Foods high in refined sugars, refined carbohydrates, and heavily processed fats (like hydrogenated oils, shortening, and margarines) have been associated with increased inflammatory activity.

  2. Poor sleep Even a few nights of inadequate sleep can increase inflammatory markers and reduce the body's ability to recover, as the body heals during sleep and without it, it becomes weaker.

  3. Chronic stress Long-term emotional or physical stress can disrupt normal immune regulation and contribute to ongoing inflammation.

  4. A sedentary lifestyle Regular movement helps regulate inflammation. Long periods of sitting have been linked to higher inflammatory markers.

  5. Excess abdominal body fat Visceral fat – also often called “beer gut” – surrounding internal organs produces inflammatory compounds that can affect the entire body.

  6. Smoking or vaping Tobacco smoke and many inhaled chemicals increase oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.

  7. Alcohol consumption Alcohol intake can damage the digestive system, liver, and immune function, promoting inflammation over time.

  8. Poor oral health Healthy gums matter too! Chronic gum disease has been linked with increased inflammation throughout the body and may contribute to cardiovascular disease.

  9. Frequent blood sugar spikes Regular consumption of sugary foods and beverages can contribute to insulin resistance and inflammatory changes.

  10. Untreated infections or chronic medical conditions Lingering infections and unmanaged health concerns may keep the immune system activated longer than necessary.


The encouraging news is that many of these factors are modifiable. Small, consistent lifestyle changes often have a meaningful impact over time.


Can inflammation be seen in bloodwork?

Yes, sometimes. There isn't one single blood test that confirms chronic inflammation, but several laboratory markers can provide valuable clues when interpreted alongside symptoms and medical history.

Common inflammatory markers include:

  • High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) – Often used to assess low-grade systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk.

  • C-reactive protein (CRP) – A general marker that increases when inflammation is present somewhere in the body.

  • Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) – Measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube. Faster settling may suggest inflammation.

  • Ferritin – Best known as an iron storage protein, ferritin can also increase during inflammatory processes.

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) – Changes in white blood cells and certain other components may provide additional clues when interpreted alongside other findings.


It's important to remember that these markers don't diagnose a specific disease on their own – they simply provide pieces of a much larger puzzle that should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, physical examination, and other investigations.


Become an active participant in your health

No one knows your body better than you do. Pay attention to patterns and notice when symptoms appear. Keep track of changes in your energy, digestion, sleep, mood, skin, and pain levels.


Ask questions about your bloodwork rather than simply accepting that everything is "normal." Reference ranges are designed primarily to identify disease, not necessarily optimal health, and laboratory results should always be interpreted within the context of how you are feeling.

If you don't understand your test results, ask for an explanation.


If your concerns continue without answers, seeking a second opinion is a reasonable and responsible step.

Supporting a healthy inflammatory response begins with consistent, everyday choices, such as:

  • Eating more colourful vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants.

  • Choosing healthy fats from foods such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, and oily fish.

  • Including adequate fibre to support a healthy gut microbiome.

  • Prioritising seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.

  • Moving your body every day, even if it's simply a brisk walk.

  • Managing stress through mindfulness, meditation, breathing exercises, or time spent in nature.

  • Staying hydrated.

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene.

  • Limiting ultra-processed foods and excess added sugars.

  • Working with qualified healthcare practitioners to investigate persistent symptoms rather than ignoring them.
